it's DERBY Week

roses, bourbon, & mint...it must be Derby time!

We here at {{Chic}} are not from Kentucky,
but we are Southern girls and love any excuse to get all dressed up...
and I personally LOVE all the women in their hats and heels!

So while doing some research for party ideas, I learned a few things about this American institution.
First, the locals don’t call it “the Kentucky Derby” but rather Derby or Derby Week
Secondly, it’s a holiday in Louisville,
to the point where complete strangers wish each other “Happy Derby!” the day of the race.
Lastly, "the Derby" refers to only one of many races held that day
This is probably obvious to those who follow horse racing,
but then, I’ve always been the sort who is more interested in the fashion then the horsies!
I’m more about the social events surrounding the event rather than the contest itself.
{{when it comes to this sport, but whenever it's College Football- that's a different story!}}

Happily, the Derby presents social opportunities even if you’re not in Louisville.

SO if you can’t make it to Churchill Downs yourself,
this is SUCH a fun excuse to get together and throw a party at home!

it's SOUP day!

HAPPY National Homemade SOUP day!

French Onion Soup

*1 stick of butter
*5 medium onions
*1 cup (BIG cup) of Chardonnay
((& while it's out pour yourself some!))
*4 cups of low sodium chicken broth
*4 cups of beef broth
*2 cloves of minced garlic

*3-4 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce
*1 loaf of French Bread
*Gruyere Cheese Block
*3 Sprigs of Thyme

Preheat oven 400 degrees

Cut onions in half and then cut in thin slices (not too thin but thin)

Melt butter in soup pot or dutch over on medium/high heat.
Add onions and toss in butter and cook for 20 min.
Place soup pot into oven and crack the lid so the onions can brown.
Cook for 30 min and then stir onions.
Then cook for another 30 min. If the onions are not a nice shade of light brown/brown cook longer.

When onions are done, place back on stove on medium heat and cook for about 4 min.
Then add the glass of wine(turn off heat before and then turn back on) Cook the wine until it reduces(about 5 min)
Next, add both broths. Then add the dashes of Worcestershire and minced garlic.
Add the springs of Thyme. Bring to a boil and then reduce to simmer.
Simmer for 30-45 min. Remove the Thyme after done simmering.

When the soup is about done ...
Butter the ¾ inch slices of frech bread and broil on low for 3-4 min and then broil on high for 1-2 min.
If you do not have ramekins, add the shredded gruyere right before the bread is done in the over and melt.
If you have ramekins, place the crispy French bread slice in the soup and cover with the cheese and place in the oven to melt.

*SHOES-day* Tuesday!

I came across this stunning mesh bootie online.
This gorgeous shoe immediately got my attention!
What I love, especially, about this boot is the lacey look of the body, with florals and mesh, and then the BIG satin bow on the top.
Not to mention, it comes in pink and black and is a peep-toe, so it’s perfect with tights!
If you are in the market for a serious statement pair of footwear,
look no further than these Badgley Mischka masterpieces.
$200, they won’t set you back an arm and a leg...
Just an arm, but that's why you have two of them!
They can be found at Nordstrom.

Cork Craft TIME!

That's right... my wine lovers... it's time to (again) put those wine corks to use!

wine cork trivet

{{To make}}
simply use a glue gun to connect the corks to each other,
making a square,
rectangle,
or whatever shape you happen to prefer.
You can use a mold like the image above, or just glue them together without one.
AND
then place in a thick box picture frame- removing the glass!

Meaning Monday

"something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"

we've all heard this before,
many Brides make sure to have all of these items,
BUT
what does it mean, & where did it come from?

Well did you know, that the above saying isn't in it's full?
there is actually another line...

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

and it's that last line that hints at it's origin.

sixpence- a coin, made of silver & worth six pennies, that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967.

So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride.
If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy.

"Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past.

"Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead.

"Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member,
whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride.
(The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.)

as for the "Something blue" ...
blue has been connected to weddings for centuries.
In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity.
Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color.
Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like,
"Marry in blue, lover be true."

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security.
It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck.
For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe.
These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted,
and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.
